Gambling 3 No Trump ------------------- The 23-25 hands rarely come up, and can be bid via the strong 2C. This frees up the 3NT bid for something that comes up as frequently: a hand with a long and solid minor. So, Gambling 3NT shows: -a long and solid minor (usually 7 card suit) -most likely the point count is about 10 hcp. -no four card major -no voids Responses to Gambling 3 NT are: 0) pass: stoppers in most of the other suits. 1) 4C: run, partner passes or bids diamonds 2) 4D: slam try a) Opener rebids 4NT to discourage w/ weak hand, else b) bids a suit as a cue bid 3) 4M: 6 card suit w/ no outside A Opener can rebid 4NT or 5 of the minor as discouraging 4) 4NT: slam try, and not enough for (2) 5) 5C: Just couldn't let opener play in 3NT. opener corrects to 5D if D are the suit. Examples: S: xx You have 8 tricks and with a favorable H: Kxx lead (heart) or a nice looking dummy D: x you can make 9 tricks. C: AKQJxxx S: x Long diamond suit should bring in about H: Kx 8 tricks and favorable leads should bring D: AKTxxxxx in the rest. C: xx S: Kxx You could conceivably open 1C and jump in H: A clubs on your second turn. But opening D: Kx 3NT in 3rd/4th seat would be reasonable. C: KQJTxxx S: A This is too strong of a hand to open with H: Kx 3NT. Bid 2C instead. After all, all you D: Axx need is an ace and two tricks from partner C: AKQxxxx to make 7NT! S: x Do not bid 3NT.
